Project Grading
Projects are graded according to the following criteria:

Required Pages

  1. About Us
  2. Contact Us
  3. Privacy Policy (in your own words)
  4. Acknowledgments (of non-original ideas and text and non-original graphics)
  5. Advertising (multiple animated ads and text explaining purpose of the ads)
  6. Business Plan
Content Pages
  • Home page with original graphic professional-sized logo and trademark notice
  • Navigation for all pages and copyright notices
  • Operational form (typically Contact Us)
  • Cut and paste JavaScript (or Java applet or DHTML)
  • Meta tags
Business Plan (see Business Plan lecture outline for all subheadings)

  • Overview
  • Marketing Plan
  • Development Plan
  • What I Have Learned
  • Endnotes (that show connections to course lectures and readings and thus substantiate the Business Plan)
Coding
  • Clean code (see Examples of common errors)
  • Commented code
  • CSS for no underlining of links
  • Cascading Style Sheets beyond "no underlining" (for HTML Level 2 and 3 students)
  • DHTML, ASP, or XML elements (for HTML Level 2 and 3 students)

All HTML code (but not JavaScript) must be written by the student. It is not acceptable to reverse-engineer another site's code or to use another site's CSS in its entirety. Students without original HTML code will receive an F for coding.

Additional Grading Criteria
  • Suitability to purpose
  • Completeness
  • Creativity
Business Plan Style

Please use black text and the Times Roman font with no font size specified on a white background for the main text of your Business Plan. Also, please do not use a navigation table on the left-hand side of the page where the business plan text goes. Remember, this Business Plan is for your instructor only and so your primary concern should be how easy it is to read. Anyone ignoring this requirement will have their project grade reduced by one letter grade.

Writing Quality

The class follows the suggestion of the business community to develop skills in effective communication by requiring that Web site content and Business Plans be well written. This includes grammar, spelling and, certainly, proofreading. Projects falling short of this requirement will have lower grades.

Originality of Project

All projects in Web Business Strategy must be original. They cannot have been done for another course in the past and cannot be current projects for another course. This issue typically arises with respect to a class on entrepreneurship, but could involve another class as well. The Marketing Department will examine your course schedule to see if there is a potential for a conflict. If a project is the same as that for another course the project grade will be F.

Project Due Date

All projects are due at noon on the last day of class. Student FTP access will cease at noon and the project grade will be based on whatever files are in students' subdirectories at noon that day. There will be no exceptions to this policy, so it is wise to plan to finish projects before the last minute.
