Before taking Web Business Strategy, HTML code was like a foreign language to me. Whenever I would view the source of a page, I had absolutely no idea what anything meant. After only a few class periods with Professor Schultz, I was able to read, write, and understand an incredible amount of HTML. In fact, I began looking forward to coming to class every night just to see what new technique, procedure, or skill we were going to learn. After just a semester of this class, I now feel extremely confident that I can design and maintain a fully functional Web site all on my own ... Although there were times that I became frustrated in this class, I (along with the gracious help of Becky and Professor Schultz) always found a way to solve whatever problem was giving me trouble. In addition to the technical skills that I was able to learn, this class also taught me a great deal about solving conflicts and overcoming obstacles. I am very glad I took Web Business Strategy because it provided me with an entirely new set of priceless skills that I will be able to use for the rest of my life.
Prior to this class, I knew nothing about HTML. It was a foreign language to me. Although I was intimidated the first day of class, I knew I would be glad that I took this course and learned these HTML aspects. As it turned out, this has been one of my favorite classes ever. This class has taught me something I think I can use for a long time. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I have a few other ideas that would revolve around creating a business Web site. It will save costs for me to create the site myself. Now at the end of the semester, I found myself wanting to spend all of my time on the Web site and even losing sleep over it. I've found it rewarding to know HTML. I also have enjoyed creating and altering graphics with Paint Shop. These graphic techniques will be useful in the future as well. I am proud for all that I have learned and glad I took this class.
I found it interesting to learn how e-commerce really plays an important part in today's world. By reading articles for my journal and listening to Professor Schultz's lectures, I realized how much work can go into one business and how many little things a Web site maintainer needs to pay attention to. Since this class started, I've found my knowledge of e-commerce helpful in everyday conversations and topics discussed in my other classes. I also began analyzing every Web site that I went to and deciding how I would change the business model. I found it especially interesting to find out how Web sites make money and ways to promote a Web business.
Before I came to this class, I honestly thought that the only things to learn about the Web were the design aspects. While I can admit that the design part of the class was the most interesting to me, I am actually relieved a to have naively signed up for a class on Web 'strategy' so that I could be exposed to the E-Commerce side as well. Reflecting on my E-Commerce notebook, I realize how much information I've been exposed to. This class has started me reading the Wall Street Journal again and looking at it in a whole new light. Prior to this class, I never realized the extent to which E-Commerce overwhelms the business place. The countless articles and issues on the subject each day made me feel very fortunate to be getting exposed to the subject before I got left behind. Furthermore, after taking Professor Schultz's other class on Marketing Management, I am now able to mess together the related skill sets I have learned in both courses and use them in my quest for successful business operations on the Internet.
... Wow, I have come so far since day one! This was one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. I actually wanted to come to class and work on this project because of how different it was. Also, after the completion of this project I felt good about myself. I was so surprised that I, someone with no HTML experience, could make a site like I did after just one semester. I can't imagine what I could learn in just a whole year. I really enjoyed this class and even found it addicting. Even though the class is over, I plan on adding more to my Web site because a few of my friends have already asked me to send them the site and help them get in shape. My family was amazed when they saw the final project. Thank you for the great experience.
Web Business Strategy was an amazing class to take and I think it will help when searching for a job after graduation. To say "I know HTML" is unbelievable! I never thought I would be able to learn so much about designing Web sites and technical skill with many designing programs in one semester. If I could take this class over again, I would. I have found a new area within the business field that I really enjoy. I hope to continue with Web designing in the future.
I was also amazed by the security and privacy lecture. Professor Schultz told us that we would be more concerned about privacy than security leaving this class and he is exactly right. I always thought giving a credit card number over the Internet was not very secure but after he assured us it was because of the encryption codes today. Professor Schultz showed us how to protect our computer from cookies and now I have increased my privacy settings so that no one can watch and follow me around in my browser.
WOW! I can't believe that I have learned to build a high quality Web site in such a short time. Before this class, I had very little knowledge about HTML, graphics, and Web site construction. I can remember feeling very intimidated by our first class because I had no idea if I could learn to read a foreign language - HTML. The technical skills I have learned have not come easy. It has taking me a lot of hard work and long hours to learn many of the skills to build Dorm Rooms Unlimited. I know that Web design is not my specialty, but I feel very proud of the work I have done this semester. I am so glad that I took this class because I am very confident that it will help me in my business career.
I have learned so much about e-commerce over the course of this semester by reading many articles, looking at company Web sites, listening to Professor Schultz's lectures, and writing in my notebook. I really enjoyed learn about privacy and security. After learning about these important issues, I was able to get rid of spyware on my computer and beef-up the security of my personal computer. Also, I have learned to find new resources in order research e-commerce news. The e-commerce knowledge that I have gained has helped me in many of my other business courses this semester.
When I started this course, I was technologically illiterate. I had no idea how you would even begin a web site, let alone maintain one. After the first class I seriously contemplated dropping the course, but decided I would stick it out. After going through many trials and tribulations (and many long nights in front of the computer), I feel like I might have a small grasp on web site design and coding. Even though the class pushed me to my wit's end many nights of the week, in the end it is a skill that will give me much opportunity in the future. Now, I am designing three web sites for friends and family members and their local businesses. I cannot wait to learn more about designing and coding web sites because I know it will take me far in the future.
Being a marketing and economics major, I thought I knew all there was to know about e-commerce. However, after hearing Professor Schultz lecture about many of the insights to the companies that do business on the web, I now know there are many ins and outs of the e-commerce business and that it is not just selling advertising or tangible product. Although I did not complete the notebook about the many articles on e-commerce, I did get to read many articles and gained some insight as I studied for the midterm. I now realize e-commerce is a huge part of our economy and it is very important to understand.
I have learned such a great deal about e-commerce through this course. The weekly notebook entries enabled me to read numerous articles about various topics. I found myself reading for hours before choosing specific articles to write about. I never knew there was so much going on in e-commerce. I have also found myself a few specific times having educated conversations with people about various topics about e-commerce. I never knew I would become so interested about this but because of this course I am much more educated with recent and past topics and have the desire to continue learning. It has also been neat to follow up with some of the recent situations that I included in my notebook and see where they are today.
When I initially created the "hi mom" page on the first day of class, I could not have believed I would have created a semi-complete E-commerce Web site. Step-by-step, I learned the skills needed to do so. I can actually say that I am very proud of my accomplishment of the creation of Vintage Vinyl. At times meeting the technical goals was frustrating, but with time, patience and a little help from Professor Schultz, I learned a lot about Web site creation. I think that I did not learn these Web design skills in vain because I am sure I will use them at some point in my career or personal life.
I was afraid to take this class, but after the first week, I got hooked. I am so glad I decided to stay in the class. I can't even express how much I have learned in this class. I was introduced to HomeSite, Paint Shop Pro, and Animation Shop—three softwares I had not previously worked with. But now, I can do about anything in one of the three. My confidence of building a Web site has soared, knowing that I now know how to interrupt HTML code. I am proud of my site and now realize that Web designing is very time-consuming and addicting.
I recently was offered a job that will utilize my knowledge of HTML and Web designing. I'm excited about my new position and along with having the opportunity to increase my skills and knowledge. I want to thank you for all your help and support throughout the semester. This truly has been my favorite class at Iowa.
The e-commerce notebook has helped me understand how businesses online differ from those offline. I also learned how quickly the consumer and technological environments can change online and that businesses have to constantly adapt to keep up or be left behind, possibly to become extinct. I think that my new understanding and familiarly with e-commerce will not only help me become a better consumer, but also a better businesswoman.
I feel as if I have taken more away from this class than almost all of my MIS classes combined. Professor Schultz showed us the “who, what, where, when and why,” involved with Web site development and e-commerce strategies and he did it at a pace that everyone could understand and learn.
I had no HTML experience as I entered into this class. I also had no experience in Paint Shop Pro or Animation Shop. I was very intimidated on the first day of class but ready for the challenge. I remember reading the 'What I Have Learned Sections' from past students. They motivated me, because I was in the same boat as them. However, tables night came along and I became very acquainted with the F word, frustrating...It is a very hands-on skill that we learned and I am so glad that I took this course. I find myself almost every time I visit a Web site that I check their source code. I'm even bragging to my friends about the different things I know about the Internet and Web development and they don't.
I hesitated for weeks if I should take this course and actually registered for it the day before the class met. I was very intimidated because I knew very little about computers and nothing about writing in HTML. I finally got the courage to take the course and had Professor Schultz sign my add slip. While in his office, he asked if I had ever worked with HTML, and after that question, I began to hesitate again if I should take the class. Now, all I have to say to anyone hesitating like I did, do not worry! Professor Schultz went through every step in detail and you really do not need to know anything about HTML. Now when I view the source of Web pages, I can pick out many things I understand. Tables definitely took me the longest to understand. I said the "F" word (frustrating) on many occasions when pictures or text did not appear they way I wanted them to. Even thought the class was frustrating at times, I am so happy I decided to take this class. This summer I had no idea I would have learned so much about HTML and making Web sites. I cannot wait to help create a Web site over winter break!
If anyone had told me that by the end of this semester I would be able to understand technically what's involved with HTML coding, I would have a really good laugh. I didn't think that I was the technical type. Yes, I am a perfectionist, and yes I like organization, but I didn't necessarily think that those characteristics would make a candidate for being a Web site designer! I came into this class with absolutely no HTML skills, and I am the first to admit that I was petrified after the first class. Now, I am happy to report that I actually feel confident in my technical skills, and my understanding of e-commerce.
The notebook portion of this class really allowed me to focus on e-commerce and what types of things are going on in the industry. I believe this was a fantastic way to get our minds thinking about this subject.
During the course of the semester, my knowledge about e-commerce has increased dramatically. Most of my pre-course knowledge on this topic accumulated from my own Web surfing experiences and through numerous media sources. Professor Schultz's weekly lectures were effective because he tied in "real-world" examples to illustrate the application of topics. After certain lectures, I found myself thinking about the topic for several days. My learning was further enhanced through my weekly journal entries, which I found to be far more effective in learning the material than simply cramming for tests.
The progress that I have made in this class has been truly remarkable. I had my doubts after the first night of class but I am thankful that I decided to give it a shot. I can proudly say that I will walk away with from this class with the confidence to produce a successful site of my own. I am proud of the knowledge and confidence that I have gained from this class because if anyone had fears it was me. The first night of class, I was terrified that I would make a mistake. I felt that HTML was like a foreign language and FTP was like a disaster waiting to happen. Nevertheless, I kept with it and I could not be happier. HTML is an incredible skill that I am sure to use in the future. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to take this class with Professor Schultz. I am certain that I could not have done it with out his constant support and encouragement.
When I first started this class at the beginning of the semester I thought I would never figure out what was going on with HTML. However, Professor Schultz showed us how to do all kinds of things and presented them in an easy to learn manner. I never imagined learning how to make a banner advertisement or uploading information onto a server. The terminology I have walked away with will be priceless to me and I am so glad I was able to attend this class. One of my favorite things to do now is "view the source" on web pages. It is really cool to think that most of what is there is recognizable to me! I also never new there were such things as meta tags. That explains a lot about how search engines are locating information. Finally, after our lecture on privacy, I have installed numerous programs on my computer to combat hackers and fraud. I never even would have known about "probing ports" had it not been for this class. This was one of the most fun and interesting classes I have ever taken and I am thrilled to have been here.
Before this class the only time that I paid any attention to anything related to e-commerce was if some item I wanted came up for bid on E-bay. This class has opened up a completely new world to me. I really enjoyed checking the Internet for news articles about online companies. I never knew so much went into a search engine site like Google, a site that I have visited thousands of times. While I had heard of most of the e-businesses that went bankrupt in the past couple of years, it was very interesting to learn exactly how they went bankrupt, exactly what mistakes they actually had made. By far the biggest thing I will take out of this class is just how little privacy you actually have on the Internet. Before the class, I looked at the lack of privacy as something out of a Hollywood movie. Never again will I look at it like that; it is now something that I take very seriously.
The amount that my knowledge about e-commerce has increased by taking this class is one hundred percent. I am a MIS major, but I had no previous knowledge of this topic. I enjoyed doing the notebooks because we were allowed to choose our own articles that interested us. I read a lot on security and privacy issues and was very surprised at just how much other people can invade my home computer. Reading the articles about e-commerce also reinforced what we learned in lecture ... My research on e-commerce in this class has been very beneficial in helping me develop my own Web site, as well as carrying over into other classes I am taking.
I feel that Web Business Strategy was one of the best courses that I have taken in my college career. After four and a half years, that's a lot of classes! However, I feel that everything that I learned in 6M:105 was valuable to my future and applicable to the current business environment. The information was always current and the amount of resources that Professor Schultz made available was endless. I am very happy with my decision to take Web Business Strategy as my final marketing elective.
I have learned so much in this semester course that I will actually be able to take with me. I have so much fun being able to go to any site, view the source code, and actually understand what I am looking at. I enjoy telling friends and family who are unaware of HTML things I learned in class and seeing them stare aimlessly. I would strongly recommend this course to anyone who is interested in having fun while learning a lot.
Professor Schultz told us that many students would use the "f" word a lot. Frustration. I found that this was true. Many times I ended up working for about an hour to fix one thing and just could not get it. In the end I really appreciate all that I have learned from this class. Not only will it look great to future employers, it will be a good skill for me to have for my own benefit if I ever want to create my own Web site.
Overall, I can honestly say that I have learned more in this class than any other class I have taken in college. The tools that I have learned have really advanced my computer skills and hopefully will be noticed by my future employers. I learned a tremendous amount about e-commerce through our weekly notebooks. At first I will admit that I thought it was going to be a lot of work, turning in a notebook every week, but I can honestly say that I enjoyed learning about all the different companies that can be found on the Internet.
On the first day of Web Business Strategy I thought I had a relatively good concept of how HTML works, however, within an hour of class I was proven wrong. I have learned so many relevant concepts in this class that I will be able to apply to my future career. As I look back throughout the semester and recall some of the e-commerce material I read and critiqued, I realize how much this aspect of the course added to my overall understanding. I primarily read articles from the Wall Street Journal for the notebook assignments. Each week I would look forward to these articles because I was actually reading material I was interested in.
I have a concluding comment that you may find humorous. I was working on my site a few nights ago when my husband glanced at my monitor. He said in a fearful voice, "what is that?" My response in a rather confident voice was, "HTML source code." I found this humorous because just 16 short weeks ago I was the one asking, "what is that" and now I’m the confident web developer in the family.
I had taken a couple of programming classes before this class because I am also an M.I.S. major with my Marketing major. In all honesty, Professor Schultz taught me more to do with programming than any of my M.I.S. professors. I actually enjoyed coming to class to learn code rather than dread it like I did the other programming classes. It made me more interested in programming and gave me confidence I can do it once I graduated. Professor Schultz also taught me more about what is out there on the Internet. I am still amazed at all the sites that he showed the class that are beneficial and fun to look at. Either he has way to much time on his hands or he knows what he is looking for when he surfs. I am glad I ended up taking this course because of the knowledge and confidence I gained from it.
Before I registered for Web Business Strategy if someone would have told me that I was going to be developing a web site I would of laughed in their face. So I guess that would be the case, because I did learn how to develop a web site. Learning HTML was a very big hurdle for me, due to the lack of experience I had before entering the class. I have learned more in this class then I have learned in any other class at the University. Also, what I did learn, I will be able to apply my skills and show off my work. The skills I have obtained during this class will give me an advantage while entering the job market.
In taking this course, I didn't know what to expect. I hadn't really heard anything about the course or teacher being I am a MIS major, not a marketing major. I was hoping to expand my knowledge on some areas and if I got lucky, have a chance to do some coding and hone my skills. To say the least, I was ecstatic when I found that we would be coding during class and that I would be encouraged to explore areas that I had little or no experience in. I was also very pleased with Professor Schultz. This is not me trying to get a better grade, I really enjoyed and even looked forward to coming to class.
This class has prepared me for my future job working at USWeb/CKS. I showed them my site during my interview and they were impressed. So I glad I learned what I did, and I am sure it will help me in my career.
Since I basically knew nothing coming into this course, I can honestly say that I've gain a whole other world of wealth from this course. My understanding of the things we've learned from this class absolutely astonishes me. I was probably the most excited person leaving our first day of class just because I had a web page that said, "Hi Mom."
Coming into this class, I had absolutely no knowledge HTML and had thought very little about how a web page was designed. I was a little nervous after signing up for the course, but I had heard nothing but good things about both the class and the professor. I was relieved after the first night of class, when others seemed to be beginners too. As the semester went on, I suddenly found myself becoming comfortable with HomeSite and enjoyed designing my logo and experimenting on Paint Shop Pro. Although I got easily frustrated when things didn't look at all like I thought they would, I found myself looking at the clock to see that an hour had passed while I was perfecting just one table on my site. I have thoroughly enjoyed the technical aspect of this course, and the knowledge and skills I've gained will certainly prove to be an asset in the business world.
I am completely astounded by the amount of information I have learned through this course. At the beginning of this course I had some minor experience with web pages, but I had never worked with HTML or an HTML editor, such as HomeSite, before. The idea of being able to create my own Web site using HTML seemed like a unachievable thought to me, but I took the challenge and I am very pleased with the outcome ... I feel that everything that I have learned in this class will be of great assistance in my life after college. I plan on opening and running my own business, and in an age where almost every business will eventually have an online presence, these skills will greatly assist me in getting an online presence for my own business.
What I have learned throughout this course has been no less than amazing. Coming in, I had no knowledge of HTML and, frankly, after the first couple of classes I wondered if I ever would. Then it finally started clicking and I was doing things to my web site that, a few weeks earlier, I would have thought were impossible. I now have the ability to create a web page whenever I want to. This will be a huge benefit for me moving forward. I have started the interview process looking for a job after I graduate. Every time I mention that I'm creating my own web site and know some HTML I see that it makes an impact on the interviewer. Knowing HTML is one major skill that helps to set me apart from all of the other candidates applying.
I've known for quite some time that I wanted a career working with marketing and information technology. I've often received mixed reactions as to the logic behind this decision. I've been told by some that there isn't enough of a connection between the two to make a career of it. I've also been told that it's a great combination, but rarely does anyone know how to apply them together. After three years at the university, I had not taken any courses reassuring my decision, nor did any of my coursework encourage a connection between the two disciplines. I was beginning to think that I made a mistake. It appeared as if I would have to take a sales job to get into the field of marketing, or take a consulting position to work with information technology. My entire thought process changed and evolved once I began Web Business Strategy. For the first time in nearly four years, I was taking a course that involved both marketing and technology! Although the last fifteen weeks haven't always been easy, they have been enjoyable. I find myself wanting to work on my Web site, rather than dreading the semester-long project. I began searching for a job where I could do this all of the time! This course has given me the reassurance that there is a position for me in the real world and that there are opportunities for me to do what I've wanted to do for so long. For that, I thank you.
Everywhere you turn these days, you hear about dot-coms and the Internet. It either concerns failure or success. After taking Web Business Strategy, I believe that I understand why these dot-coms fail and/or the reason they succeed. Even though there are failures, e-commerce will see increasing growth in the future. I feel that I have a better understanding of the phenomenon, and I feel very lucky to have taken Web Business Strategy while at the University of Iowa.
